BSc or Integrated Masters in Chemistry at IIii level or higher (or equivalent) or CHEM5116M or CHEM 5126M.

Module summary

Physical organic chemistry and its role in the development of methods for the manufacture of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Objectives

To give students a detailed knowledge of physical organic chemistry, and its relevance to fine chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture.

Learning outcomes
- Knowledge of physical organic chemistry, appreciation of its relevance to large scale reactions, with examples illustrating possible implications of unanticipated phenomena;
- Understanding of process development for manufacturing

- Process development principles
- Reaction kinetics
- Pre-equilibria in homogeneous systems
- Competing reactions
- Solvent effects on reaction rates and selectivity
- Phase equilibria and species distribution in reaction and work-up
- Mixing effects on reactivity in pseudo-homogeneous systems
- Agitators, dispersion mixing and separation in two-phase systems
- Multiphase reactions - factors influencing rate and selectivity
- Scale-up.
