Objectives

The module introduces the philosophy behind diversion of organic wastes from landfill and provides a policy background against which a range of technologies for recovery of energy and other resources are best achieved, both financailly and environmentally.

Learning outcomes
* Awareness of how government policy influences technological decisions;
* An understanding of the key EU Directives that influence waste policy;
* A detailed understanding of the technologies available for treating organic wastes with energy recovery and how the different nations in the EU are applying these;
* Design skills appropriate to tender responses to energy from waste schemes;
* Awareness of the key research initatives across Europe driving waste reduction and renewable energy recovery.

Skills outcomes
Policy interpretation into design schemes. Tender evaluation and response. Design approaches for resources recovery.


Syllabus

The policy landscape for waste reduction and recycling. Combustion energy from waste; gasification and pyrolysis. Biogenic energy content. Mechanical pre-treatment for anaerobic digestion. Types of digestion: wet and dry, mesophilic and thermophilic; biochemistry of the digestion process; digester design. Digester outputs - the best uses for biomethane. Other options - biorefinery concept; algal bioreactors and nutrient recycling.
