Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...Newsgathering skills
- Developing the ability to research, retrieve and generate information through understanding news output and the newsgathering decisions made by broadcasters.
- Developing skills in critical analysis, research, production and communication, through the emphasis on a news specialism.
- Developing the ability to produce creative and original output, through engagement in research using social media and other news tools.
- Broadcasting skills
- Learning how to plan and produce reports as a video journalist , including camera skills, sound recording, video editing and post-production skills..
- Developing an understanding of Health & Safety requirements .
- Gaining an understanding of the key production roles within a TV news studio,
- Organisational skills
- Mastering time management , including the ability to organise tasks and to work to a deadline.
- Developing the ability to think critically and independently.
- Demonstrating skills in team work, communication and decision making
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to
- Demonstrate a knowledge of how to research a story for TV employing regulatory, legal and ethical frameworks.
- Develop an understanding of how to film and edit a short factual story.
- Develop the skills and conventions of camera operation.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply visual and narrative conventions.
Skills outcomes
Students should, at a basic level, have learned to:
- Operate camera and sound equipment, and the Avid editing system.
- Produce short location items to a high technical standard.
- Produce the necessary paperwork to support production.
- Gained an understanding of the principles of TV studio broadcast.
Syllabus
- Learning how to research and produce a TV news story , including advice on how to storyboard a report; developing health and safety expertise; considering legal and editorial responsibilities; understanding about obtaining permission to film; consents for broadcast; and understanding copyright.
- Instruction on camera operation including conventional shot sizes; filming sequences; understanding TV grammar and continuity; and instruction in sound recording including microphone types and recording techniques.
- Instruction in conventional editing principles and practice including capturing material, shotlisting, and the selection of material.
- Practicing key TV journalism skills, such as interviewing; scripting; cue writing; practicing pieces to camera and gaining feedback on performance, including voice training.
- Gaining an understanding of the key production roles within a TV news studio, the operation of TV studio equipment and understanding how a news report is broadcast.

Private study
Private study consists of research, filming and editing for two news reports.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Group project completed before Easter and feedback provided before students start their individual assessment.The final two practical sessions are devoted to editing of the individual project, with staff available for support.
