Module summary

This introductory module is designed to introduce students to photographic techniques based on the digital production and editing of images and to allow them to explore, through historical study, the development of key aesthetic and social uses of photographic practice in terms of narrative and storytelling, documentation and art photography. The module will allow students to develop key digital photographic techniques and enable them to situate their own practice within broader historical and cultural discourses.

Objectives

The key objectives of this module are to:
1. Introduce students to the principle techniques of digital photography and to develop key skills in relation to the capture and postproduction of digital photographs.
2. Introduce students to the history of dominant photographic practices.
3. Develop an understanding of the relationships between photographic tradition and their own practice.
4. Begin to place their own practice within broader cultural discourses.

Learning outcomes
The key knowledge outcomes are the ability to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the principle techniques of digital photographic production and post production.
2. Produce and edit digital images to an introductory standard.
3. Contextualise and situate practice within broader photographic traditions and cultural discourses.
4. Write critically about photographic practice and dominant historical traditions.

Private study

Throughout the course of this module students will be engaged in guided reading and
practice based exercises leading to two summative pieces of work. The period of private study will be a combination of critical and historical reading and the development of digital photographic practice towards the submission of their portfolio images.

Research / Reading 23 hours; Practice 75 hours; Editing 50 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be monitored via the formative and summative assessment process, receiving feedback at each stage. They will also be monitored via the tutorial and practical sessions as they develop their submissions.
