Objectives
This module progresses students’ understanding of the techniques and editorial responsibilities of TV news production. The module aims:1. To provide students with comprehensive practical instruction on how to research and film a story on location, how to edit material, and develop television production skills.
2. To enable students to develop their research skills and awareness of the editorial responsibilities of broadcasting through script writing and news production.
3. To help students acquire the discipline and skills required to produce a TV news programme.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
1. Demonstrate an ability to identify research and produce TV news projects to a given brief.
2. Demonstrate a proficiency in scripting, filming and editing a coherent TV news report.
3. Identify and comply with the relevant legal and regulatory requirements, producing work which achieves due balance and accuracy.
4. Contribute to the production of a TV news programme to a specified duration and deadline.
Skills outcomes
Students will learn Studio production skills, develop their camera and editing skills to a more advanced level, continued to develop their understanding of the application of legal and ethical frameworks – in this case focused on television as a context – and further developed their project management and team work skills.
Syllabus
The module will provide instruction on how to research and organise the production of a television news package of up to 2.5 mins length; practical instruction in camera skills, the ability to edit a coherent and visual narrative; and instruction on cue writing. Through instruction in the TV studio, students will have the opportunity to develop their interview, presentation and voice skills, as well as learning how to compile a news bulletin/ programme from a range of elements
