Objectives

To learn the discipline, skills and operational modes of a radio news organisation. This radio news production module will focus on the radio news programme and instruct students in the disciplines of bulletin and news programme production techniques. Students will analyse and compare editorial values across a wide range of radio news services.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:-

1 Identify, research and produce news stories suitable for specified radio audiences
2 Produce extended radio news reports to a given brief
3 Research and produce radio news bulletin items in a variety of formats appropriate to the medium
4 Identify and comply with relevant legal and regulatory constraints,
5 Display proficiency in sound capture, editing, mixing and manipulation


Syllabus

Students will learn how to produce material for short radio news bulletins and longer reports for extended news programmes. Emphasis will be placed upon the creative potential of the medium of radio and the challenges of telling a story through sound and words alone. Students will analyse radio news output, paying particular attention to editorial values and the creative treatment of stories. The contrasting editorial norms of live and scheduled news broadcasts will be considered. Students will study radio news and current affairs output from a wide cross-section of national and local radio news services. They will take particular interest in key news programmes like Today and PM and continuous news output from BBC Five Live. The style and content of independent local radio and BBC local services will be compared.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will produce a formative news package and receive detailed feedback prior to the production of the summative radio package. Students will receive formative feedback in newsday practical sessions and seminars prior to submission of news portfolio. Students will produce news portfolio items during bi-weekly newsday exercises.
