Objectives

The module aims to examine critically the challenges and issues facing journalists in a multimedia communications environment; to examine critically the research and production techniques applied by programme- makers across multimedia platforms; to consider the scholarly debates over the news audience and public knowledge; to employ the creative and editorial process required for the production of multimedia news output, across TV, radio and online; to provide students with instruction on the writing and production skills required for multimedia news output, to enable students to understand the principles of online journalism, and the employment of multimedia platform devices; and to employ the legal, political, governance, and editorial responsibilities of programme-makers.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- evaluate the critical and editorial debates concerning the development and challenges of multimedia news.
- understand the production processes required for the transmission of news output in radio, TV and online.
- demonstrate an ability to produce news to a clear deadline, employing a range of audiovisual and online techniques to deliver news across all platforms.
- demonstrate their decision making and organisational skills through the production of news output.
- demonstrate an ability to work in teams and independently.
-demonstrate a competence in the operational aspects of multimedia news production, the ability to engage in the route from research to the filming and editing of a news story in this genre, and the ability to engage in the editorial and production decision making process.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will have acquired a proficiency in key multimedia production techniques and skills, and the ability to reflect critically on the editorial decision making process of the multimedia working environment.


Syllabus

This module examines the role of news in a multiplatform environment. It looks at the development of online news, and considers the duty of care posed to journalists when writing for the web. It analyses the changing relationship with the news audience and questions the role of investigative reporting in a multimedia context. Through a series of formative tasks, students will receive instruction on the skills of creating news output for TV, radio and online. They will also be instructed on how to deal with breaking news and further their skills in analysing how a story can be developed through different multimedia news treatments.

Private study

Private study time should be dedicated to news preparation and revision of skills for the multimedia assessment. Remaining private study time should be dedicated to preparing for the seminars and reading, researching and preparing the essay.
