Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
This modules requires students to analyse news broadcast genres and to gain production expertise in multimedia news output .
The module aims
1) To examine critically how news programmes are produced in a multimedia communications environment
2) To reflect on the legal, ethical, and governance framework of multi news output,
3) To analyse the creative and editorial process required for the production of multimedia news.
4) To provide students with comprehensive instruction on radio and TV reporting and news production skills.
5) To enable students to understand the principles of Online journalism , and the employment of multimedia platform devices
6) To examine critically the role of audience participation, viewer response and User Generated Content

Learning outcomes
1) Students will understand the production processes required for the transmission of news output, from the research brief to the final output.
2) They will engage in the critical and editorial debates required to select multimedia news programme output.
3) Students will demonstrate an ability to produce news to a clear deadline, employing a range of audiovisual and online techniques to deliver news across all platforms.
4) Students will develop their decision making and organisational skills through the production of news output.
5) Students will work on individual tasks within a team structure,. This provides the opportunity for students to debate editorial values and production techniques with their peers, whilst requiring them to deliver their own work to a tight deadline within the group’s requirements

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will have acquired a proficiency in multimedia reporting and key production techniques and skills.
This enables them to analyse the multimedia working environment and to reflect critically on the 24/7 deadlines required for modern journalists..


Syllabus

This module is an intensive, practical insight into Multimedia news and the decision making processes required for programme output. Students will be divided into news teams, and each team is responsible for developing a Tv or radio programme, and associated Online news output.
They will be required to demonstrate a proficiency in dealing with breaking news and further their skills in analysing how a story can be developed through different multimedia news treatments.
The students will be required to write news output which will demonstrate;
- a competence in the operational aspects of multimedia news production..
- the ability to engage in the route from research to the editing of a news story in this genre.
- the ability to engage in the editorial and production decision making process for a range of programme formats.
- the skills required to devise a programme running order to a strict deadline and to a specific length.
- Students will be required to analyze critically the output of each task

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are assigned an individual task within a tv or radio programme or in the team producing associated online news output. They select evidence of work across all multimedia disciplines for the portfolio submission
