Objectives
This module examines the development, theory and form of the contemporary ecology of mobile media and applies this knowledge in a technical context in which students will develop the skills to create mobile products, services or campaigns.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of theories, conventions and uses of mobile technologies;
2. Design, produce and/or evaluate mobile communications campaigns, mobile websites, applications or services
3. Experiment with mobile media development practices and critically analyse the forces that shape the production and consumption of mobile content, products and services
4. Critically analyse the complex relationships between mobile media, culture and society
Skills outcomes
Mobile application and campaign planning and production.
Syllabus
Issues to be covered include:
Defining mobile media and the ecology of the mobile media industry; key drivers in mobile media usage (personal and portable, connected and social); challenges posed by mobile as a mass media channel and some solutions and adaptations; networks and communities as drivers of mobile media (including group forming theory/mobile social networks, gamification and brand engagement); digital convergence of mobile and the integration of different technologies (such as geolocation, photography, communications) in mobile media.
Practices to be covered include:
Design for mobile; mobile app creation; cross platform publishing.
