Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
This module presents the opportunity to develop a piece of advanced new media practice, which is informed by, and contextualised within, critical and conceptual issues related to new media and society. Working independently, students produce a detailed specification document, present their ideas in verbal and written formats, implement prototypes, develop a piece of advanced new media practice and critically evaluate their work. All aspects of this process should be informed by in-depth research into relevant theoretical issues and debates.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Identify critical and conceptual issues related to new media, society, culture and economy using a range of communication, research and critical analytical skills.
- Conduct in-depth research, formulating ideas to inform the specification, development, testing and evaluation of a piece of advanced new media practice, devising appropriate research methods
- Demonstrate specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to new media in the development of advanced new media practice, adopting a proactive and self-reflective role
- Produce professional project documentation demonstrating an understanding of choices which realise, develop or challenge existing practices and traditions, and of the possibilities and constraints involved in new media production processes
- Initiate, develop and realise a piece of advanced new media practice demonstrating the ability to work independently with self-discipline, self-direction and reflexivity
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate ideas to a high academic standard using a variety of written and oral methods

Private study

Students will work independently throughout the year, conducting research, preparing for presentations, producing project documentation, and developing the piece of new media practice, solving problems that arise during the production process. The student will arrange meetings with their supervisor to receive feedback on their progress.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored in supervision meetings and by the various summative and formative assessment points throughout the year.

Students resitting this module will be required to successfully complete the following two components of assessment only: the new media practice and the essay. The other components are not available to resit. The resit grade will be calculated with the new media practice and essay as 100% of the module marks.
