Pre-requisite qualifications
All applicants must be registered with the GMC and have a miniumum of two years full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in hospital or community paediatrics. Participants must maintain a minimum of 16 hours clinical work a week throughout the course.This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
On completion of this module, students will have:- demonstrated that they are developing an integrated approach to paediatrics and child health;
- demonstrated their ability to self-direct their learning;
- have a record of their self-directed learning for the previous two years;
- have developed a portfolio to suit their personal learning requirements;
- proactively formulated ideas and hypotheses and gained experience in writing a research proposal
Syllabus
The Private Study module runs alongside the two year taught course and comprises maintaining an e-portfolio of self directed learning and preparing and presenting a research proposal.
RCPCH E-portfolio (80% of total mark)
New entrants to the PGDip Child Health on ST run-through training use the RCPCH E-portfolio and will have received a specific username and login prior to starting on the course. They are expected to maintain their E-portfolio throughout their training but it is also reviewed and assessed twice, over the taught course, by one of the course organisers. Assessment particularly focuses on the Development Log and Personal Development Plan (PDP) but entries should be made in all the following sections:

4 Reflective Events/Critical Incidents
5 Education Meetings/CPD
6 Teaching & Presentations
7 Clinical Governance
8 Research
9 Safeguarding

Entrants to the PGDip Child Health not on ST run-through training will use a similar format portfolio downloadable from the VLE
Research protocol (20% of total mark)
In the second year, all students will be expected to plan and write up a research protocol. This is presented orally to the examiners at the end of Year 2. The mark received for the protocol and viva accounts for 20% of the Private Study module. Students continuing onto the MSc Child Health will develop this protocol for the third year research project
