Pre-requisite qualifications
Students on the Child Health programme must be registered with the GMC and have RCPCH membership. They must also have a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in hospital or community paediatrics. Participants must maintain a minimum of 16 hours clinical work a week throughout the course.Module replaces

Module summary
This module provides students with the understanding and skills required to be effective as advocates for children and child health.Objectives
On completion of this module the students will have:• Increased their understanding of the key components for effective advocacy
• Received training in working with the media
• Reflected on their clinical work and identified issues requiring advocacy
Learning outcomes
1. Identify issues requiring advocacy on behalf of children in Britain today
2. Explain the component skills of advocacy, namely:
- identifying the source of a problem
- identifying the key stakeholders and influencers
- developing an approach
- using the media
3. Describe the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and its relationship to health care
4. Keep a diary and identify areas of his/her work that might demand advocacy
5. Explore the political process required to promote some advocacy issues
6. Demonstrate some competency in making good use of the media - the press, television and radio
7. Take an issue, analyse the problem, and work out a plan for advocacy action and implement over several months
Syllabus
This module aims to provide students with the understanding and skills required to be effective as advocates for children and child health. Over the course of the module, students undertake an advocacy project and learn how to analyse the issues and stakeholders, and to develop and work through a plan for action.

Private study
We schedule 15 Contact Hours for this module during which time we provide a learning experience appropriate to the students. These will consist of introductory tutorial, two progress tutorials (1.5 hours) and a final presentation and discussion of their projectsIt is expected that the student will spend time on Independent online learning as part of the completion of the workbook as an introduction to advocacy and Private study – to include further reading, on line research and preparing for the assignment.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
• Tutorials provide an opportunity for both tutor and peer feedback and discussion• Individual written feedback is provided on the assignment
