Objectives

This module aims to develop elementary practical skills in unstructured pattern making, garment construction, manufacturing methodology and terminology all within industrial standards.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- Demonstrate basic technical skills in pattern cutting, specification drawing and its application;
- Produce elementary woven samples that are well conceived, executed and presented, fulfilling the requirements of a given brief;
- Have a basic understanding of how garments are manufactured and produced commercially;
- Demonstrate basic research and analysis skills in relation to garment shapes, styles and structures and place them within their historical context;
- Rationalise efficient time management skills;
- Demonstrate visual and verbal communication skills;

Syllabus

This module is delivered through lectures, seminars, demonstrations and workshops. Its aims are to develop elementary practical skills in unstructured pattern making, garment construction, manufacturing methodology and terminology all within industrial standards.

Students will learn to operate industrial manufacturing machinery and equipment effectively and safely through the workshops. Seminars will give students the opportunity to converse in unstructured garment manufacturing terminology.

Research and analysis of shape, styles and structures leads students onto the compilation of files that record this information, plus technical details, reference sources and commercial processes, together with an inventory of work produced.

Private study

Students are asked to research and analyse garment features relating to and preparing for work completed in taught sessions. They compile this research on an A3 sheet with a page of analysis of the images included.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Informal tutorials including monitoring of skills (weekly basis in taught sessions).

This module runs across both semesters. In both semesters students receive a brief in week 1 and submit work in week 11. Where the submission notes show "x2" this indicates that 1 is submitted in each semester. If the module is failed, the re-sit will take the form of a short research project containing both visual and written information, and a pattern cutting and sample construction exercise under controlled conditions. Details will be given in the resit brief.
