Objectives

This module represents a compulsory component of the MSc and Professional Doctorate programmes in Clinical Dentistry. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their professional skills in Dentistry through developing skills that underpin research practice, to enhance their research skills and performance in the Research Project module and to receive hands-on training in the practical aspects of applying for ethical permission to carry out research on human subjects and material. In addition to providing opportunities to learn to use library and on-line facilities, the module will enable students to develop an understanding of good practice and the ethics and philosophy of research. The module also aims to provide students with some insight into intellectual property and to develop commercial awareness and knowledge of the pathways from research to commercial application of findings.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will:
- be able to search the scientific literature and compile a bibliography;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of issues related to ethics in research and the use of animals in research as well as studies on human subjects and materials;
- have gained some experience and insight into the practical procedures involved in applying for ethical permission for research;
- be able to produce a patient information sheet and consent form;
- have been introduced to the principles of intellectual property and the route to commercial exploitation of research findings/ideas;
- have been introduced to the principles of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies used in Dental research;
- demonstrate knowledge of the principles of cross-infection control and the procedures in place to ensure safe practice of research.

A series of lectures, seminars and workshops will cover the following topics:

Basic skills in information retrieval and management
Development of library skills and bibliography management
Specialist databases and information retrieval (e.g. gene and protein sequence databases; potential for patient databases)

Ethics and good research practice
Ethics in research
Introduction to GCP
The practicalities of gaining ethical approval for dental research
Patient information and informed consent
Maintenance of records and materials related to clinical research
Introduction to the Human Tissue Act

Safety
Cross infection control in Dentistry
Introduction to General laboratory and clinical safety procedures
Introduction to COSHH and risk assessment procedures

Intellectual property and translational research
Intellectual property and patents
Commercial awareness and enterprise (enterprise, SMEs and related issues, business finance and related issues, marketing and the market).

Research methodology in Dentistry
Evidence-based dentistry
Quantitative and qualitative research
Introduction to Systematic reviews
Interface between clinical and basic sciences

Planning and executing research
Principles and practice in the areas of scientific philosophy & experimental design
How to formulate a research question
