Admittance to Master of Science in Clinical Dentistry and Professional Doctorate in Clinical DentistryThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
To allow students to demonstrate to the required standards the core aspects of recognition and management of medical emergencies in the dental setting.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to demonstrate understanding of:
- the standards required by the General Dental Council with respect to medical emergencies in the dental setting;
- the guidance issued by the Resuscitation Council;
- medical Emergencies and Resuscitation - Standards for clinical practice and training for dental practitioners and dental care professionals in general dental practice;
- life Support;
- anaphylaxis;
- the likelihood of medical emergencies occurring in the dental setting.
The concept of risk management as a means of:
- identifying potential problems before they occur;
- planning dental care appropriately within the context of the patients overall health status;
- dealing with any medical emergencies promptly and appropriately.
The recognition of, and being able to provide appropriate first-line management, including:
- basic life support and use of Automatic External Defibrillators;
- use of emergency drugs and equipment.
The approach used in the Dental Institute clinical areas for management of acutely unwell people (patients, staff or visitors) including:
- the Medical Emergencies Bag;
- the Crash Trolley.
- Recognition of when you are out of your depth and need to summon help.
- Recognition of the role of the dental surgeon in leading the dental team in management of medical emergencies in the dental setting.
- The importance of keeping knowledge and skills up to date with respect to medical emergencies in the dental setting.
Skills outcomes
Practical skills essential to the safe and appropriate management of the acutely unwell person in the dental healthcare setting.
Syllabus
A combination of didactic teaching, small group practical sessions and management of simulated medical emergencies in the dedicated Medical Emergencies Training room.

Private study
Private study and independent learning will involve:- directed acquisition of knowledge such as pharmacology and therapeutics, pathophysiology and relating this to the workshops and practical sessions;
- practising and developing practical skills.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback is part of the small group sessions (Clinical Skills and Medical Emergencies). Some practical sessions also include formative assessment.Methods of assessment
