Objectives
The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to acquire advanced skills in aural and oral Chinese. On completion of this module, students should be able to comprehend aurally selections of news and reports from the Chinese broadcast media dealing with social, political and economic issues.They will also learn to interpret the general contents of such aural materials into English as well as some English scripts on similar topics into Chinese. They will practise making prepared oral presentations in Chinese to express their understanding and views on such issues and topics.
Skills outcomes
Students will improve their Chinese aural and oral communication skills. They will be more familiar with social, political and economic issues related to China by expanding their vocabulary and aural information collecting skills. As a result, they will be able to discuss topics on current affairs and global issues in Chinese and interpret between English and Chinese.
Syllabus
The module uses authentic texts from Chinese broadcasts. During the first semester, selected passages of recorded materials, dealing with social, political and economic issues, are introduced for aural comprehension. Students will practise listening and interpreting skills, which will be supported by new vocabulary and enhanced by dictation.
During the second semester, oral presentation and bilateral interpreting skills will be introduced. Students will continue to accumulate and consolidate their vocabulary on weekly topics, and learn to combine such skills with new vocabulary in exercises of interpreting between English and Chinese as well as oral presentations in Chinese.

46 hours -- Preparing oral presentations by searching materials online and structuring an outline of their presentation.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Weekly self-assessed intensive listening exercises (using model answers).Weekly classes give students opportunities to interpret or make oral presentations in a small group. Their performance will be monitored and comments provided by teachers and fellow students. They will get oral feedback from teachers on their grammar, vocabulary and other linguistic or stylistic usages.
