Module summary

Through the extensive reading (about 20 pages in book form per week) of 3-4 Chinese literary pieces selected from the post-Cultural Revolution period and secondary sources in English, this module will provide students with an in-depth study of post-Cultural Revolution Chinese literature; understanding of the political and social background of the period; and appreciation of the stylistic innovations of each work.

Objectives

By the end of this module, students will:
- have completed an in-depth study of selections of Chinese literature of the post-Cultural Revolution period;
- be able to set the works against the political and social background of the period;
- have considered interpretation and stylistic innovations.

More knowledge of the Cultural Revolution, a special social/political /cultural period in contemporary China.

Syllabus

Selections will be made from the works of writers such as Wang Meng, Liu Xinwu, Feng Jicai, Zhang Jie, Wang Anyi.: to illustrate the range of creative writing produced in China since 1976. The works reveal distinctive approaches to written style and subject matter which reflect the social and political changes of the times. Students will be directed to extensive readings of translations and secondary sources.

6 hours preparing a course work essay and tutorials
18 hours preparing for exam including an essay of 500-800 words to answer a question

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Ongoing monitoring of comprehension, translation, critical analysis in student-led seminars and 4 tutorials (Weeks 3, 7, 11 and one tutorial during the exam period). Students are also expected to write a short essay.
