Objectives
This module aims to develop written communication skills at the highest level to deal with wide range of social and academic issues. Grammatical and lexical knowledge will be reinforced through both intensive and extensive reading. Writing skills will be also enhanced through essay-writing and translation exercises.By the end of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1) Comprehend and summarise the gist of more complex and demanding authentic texts on contemporary issues both in and outside of Japan;
2) Convey an effective argument with supportive information when writing on various social/academic issues;
3) Translate English news articles and columns into natural Japanese;
4) Improve their overall skills to a level commensurate with the Japanese Proficiency Test, Level 2 or higher.
Learning outcomes
To write Japanese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Japanese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar.

Syllabus
Two classes per week. The first class will focus on the development of reading skills with special emphasis on pre-advanced grammar and vocabulary. Students will be expected to read various social and academic texts. The other class will provide writing exercises which include essays and English-Japanese translations.

Private study
- Preparation for the reading and translation materials - to check the vocabulary and kanji (50 hours)- Learning grammar and expressions by the designated textbook and other authentic materials (30 hours)
- Learning kanji by the designated textbook (30 hours)
- Homework assignments (grammar sheets, compositions, translation exercises, etc.) (20 hours)
- On-line learning using WWW materials (28 hours)
