Module summary

The module explores the sources and influences of Japanese religions on the social practices and political culture of Japan. It focuses on the language and vocabulary of Japanese religious and cultural texts, considering both historial and contemporary texts.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- critically engage readings of the broader field of Japanese Religion and Culture in Historical Context;
- show a greater awareness and understanding of the language and vocabulary of Japanese texts specific to the areas of Japanese Religion and Culture in Historical Context;
- show a high degree of competence in reading Japanese texts relating to Japanese Religion and Culture in Historical Context;
- show a greater understanding of the broader significance of the particular texts studied.

Learning outcomes
Students will acquire knowledge of readings of the broader field of Japanese Religion and Culture in Historical Context, and be familiar with the nuances of the language and the vocabulary specific to this particular field.

Students will develop the ability to discuss texts critically in terms of the context in which they were produced.

Skills outcomes
- Reading comprehension skills of Japanese texts specific to the areas of Japanese Religion and Culture in Historical Context.


Syllabus

The module will be run in student-led seminar-style classes. A variety of contemporary and important texts from the fields of Japanese Religion and Culture in Historical Context will be selected. Given the broadness of the course (encompassing history and contemporary issues), the specifics of individual texts will necessarily vary from year to year but will include such themes as the evolution of the imperial system and sovereignty throughout pre-modern history and the relation between Buddhism and State in pre-modern Japan.

Classes will consist of elements of extensive and intensive reading, followed by discussion and analysis of sections of the texts that are of interest in terms of their use of language and/or contextual relevance.

Private study

Students will spend time reading and studying texts in Japanese in preparation for seminar classes. They will also spend time preparing a critical essay and revising for the examination.
