Objectives
By the end of this module teachers will have:- an awareness of the appropriate use of an understanding of current government SEN legislation and the implications for national and local organisation of SEN provision and specific implications for deaf pupils;
- an awareness of the social and emotional challenges which may arise from a special educational need and familiarity with intervention strategies and positive support programmes;
- an understanding of the wide range of possible educational settings focusing particularly on the principles and practices of inclusive education and ways in which current research and inspection evidence inform the organisation of effective special educational needs provision;
- a working knowledge of current technology related to disability and SEN and of appropriate identification and assessment procedures for pupils with SEN;
- an understanding of the roles and responsibilities within a multidisciplinary team including advisory, curricular and managerial roles and strategies for developing effective partnership with parents;
- a full understanding of the current range of philosophies and policies affecting deaf education that exist in schools and services in Britain and of their historical context.
Syllabus
The module will provide a foundation of professional knowledge as outlined in the MQ core outcomes in the Specialist Standards by exploring the wider context of deaf education. The broader framework of SEN provision and current issues proved the starting point for the development of specific knowledge and understanding of policy and provision within deaf education.
This module will introduce the student to the historical context of the education of deaf children and provide an overview of current philosophies and the range of communication approaches.
Recent and relevant legislation and policy will be explored and the implications for all children with special educational needs and particularly deaf children will be discussed.
The role of the teacher of the deaf and other related professionals, within the wide variety of educational provision that is currently available, will be established.

This module is taught through a distance approach.This includes:
- a module study pack which requires 250 hours of private study time
- 40 hours of assignment preparation (this will include school visits and observations)

The 6 hours of lectures and seminars are given during a day school at the University.
