Objectives

On completion of this module, teachers will:

- have knowledge of principles and approaches for the strategic planning of special educational provision at a school level;
- have knowledge of principles and approaches for the co-ordination of provision through leading and managing others and the deployment of resources;
- have designed and undertaken a detailed case study and systematic evaluation of aspects of special education provision in their own work setting.

Syllabus

The module comprises an integrated programme of taught coursework and structured activities in school. Principles of policy development and planning are explored against the context of the current legislative and policy framework for inclusion. Attention is given to the roles and responsibilities of the SENECO and significant stakeholders in developing school policy for special educational provision. Consideration is given to issues concerning the management of change and innovation, maintaining an up-to-date knowledge base and the potential role of ICT in supporting the co-ordination of provision. A particular emphasis is placed on the role of the school's SEN policy document as a strategic planning tool; the different strands of the module are brought together to focus on a systematic analysis and evaluation of the extent to which its serves this function.
