Module summary
In order to pass this module, students must obtain a mark of at least 30% in any assessment component which has a weighting of more than 30% of the total module mark. On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate understanding of:-- Loudspeaker design issues (specifically frequency response, cabinets, woofer/tweeter, crossover filters);- DSP (digital signal processing).Objectives
For the students to understand many of the issues involved in modern sound systems, including loudspeaker design and digital transmission/recording systems.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should demonstrate an understanding of:-
- Loudspeaker design issues (specifically frequency response, cabinets, woofer/tweeter, crossover filters);
- DSP (digital signal processing).
Skills outcomes
Develops critical judgement of audio quality. Further experience of writing C/C++ programs.
Syllabus
Loudspeakers: woofers, tweeters, cabinets (no acoustic detail), crossover filters.
Techniques for measuring loudspeaker frequency response.
DSP (digital signal processing): simple FIR low-pass filters, abstract algorithms and C/C++ code to implement them, methods of testing them.
Implementation of such a filter, first on a laptop/desktop and then on an embedded processor.

Background reading on all aspects listed under Knowledge Outcomes above.Development of DSP software.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The first three submissions provide feedback well before the end of the module.Talking to students in the weekly labs provides far more detailed and immediate feedback.
