This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

Students will learn about the theory and practice of modern microwave circuit design.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand the principles of propagation of waves on transmission lines at high frequencies for the lossless and lossy cases;
- use ABCD and/or Scattering Parameters for the analysis of microwave circuits, including amplifiers, couplers and filters;
- use a Smith Chart to plot impedances and admittances and design matching circuits using either lumped components or transmission lines;
- show a knowledge and understanding of the properties of coaxial line, microstrip and rectangular waveguide and be able to select an appropriate medium for a given application;
- understand the design principles of small signal microwave transistor amplifiers;
- apply their knowledge to the analysis and design of microwave integrated circuits.

Syllabus

Design of passive and active components including matching networks, amplifiers and filters. Realisation in various transmission media including microstrip and coplanar MIC's, coaxial and rectangular waveguides. Use of microwave CAD tools, S-parameters and microwave measurement principles and through the use of CAD simulations for both passive and active devices.
