Objectives

To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of modern digital formats for audio and video. Students will learn how modern technology is employed for the processing of digital signals and how content is broadcast or distributed securely using broadband networks.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the compression and distribution of digital audio and video.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of dfigital television, in particular the DVB-T system.


Syllabus

- Image and video formats, transmission, compression and display.
- Digital Distribution and Broadcasting.
- Video/audio compression and distribution formats, in particular JPEG and MPEG.
- The importance of formats in modern digital media.
- The DVB-T system.
- COFDM as used by DVB-T
- Issues of signal corruption, including the path from transmitter to receiver and the amelioraton of this corruption.
- Outline of error correction as used by DVB-T
