Objectives

The LM project is the main individual project for MEng students where they are assessed on their ability to tackle a research or development challenge in a project specialism within the area of their programme of study.

Students are required to investigate and define the problem and use available resources to develop a solution by employing the knowledge and skills gained in previous years of study.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- investigate and define a problem and use available resources to develop a solution;
- use creativity to establish an innovative solution to a research or development requirement;
- demonstrate an understanding of the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering;
- demonstrate project management skills including time planning, working to deadlines and producing deliverables;
- demonstrate competence with decision making, managing change and risk, identifying and managing cost drivers;
- manage technical uncertainty, analyse scenarios and identify realistic options;
- demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communications;
- understand how to make use of technical literature and other information sources;
- develop communication skills and the ability to reflect on their progress by working with an expert (the project supervisor) and gaining experience of their work being put under sustained scrutiny.


Syllabus

- Project planning and management. Identification of resources and managing cost drivers.
- Identification and analysis of project risk.
- Working with Gantt charts, work breakdown structure, critical path, milestones and deliverables.
- Safe working practices / hazardous substances, Risk assessment.
- Report writing and oral presentation.

Individual literature survey and project work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive feedback from the interim assessment and oral presentation which the student will apply to his/her continuing project work and in the writing of the final report.
