Module summary
Contemporary French politics is often characterised by a situation of 'crisis': growing disaffection, a withdrawal from participation, a decline of traditional political structures, a retreat into the private sphere, are all aspects of a profound crisis within French public life. The French, according to some observers, have turned away from politics and are no longer prepared to engage in collective struggles and causes. This module will explore the current crisis affecting French politics. We will examine contemporary debates surrounding the notion of a crise de la politique or a malaise dans la représentation, looking at examples of recent political writing on this subject. - What are the causes and dimensions of this crisis? - How can it be justified or explained? - We will go on to look at the practice of French politics in a number of key areas including, elections and the Constitution.- What are the challenges confronting established political structures and practices? - To what extent is the French Constitution in need of radical reform? We will also consider a number of other contemporary issues and themes such as, decentralisaton, parité and la gauche de la gauche. Objectives
