Module summary

This module provides students with the opportunity to develop research and writing skills through a dissertation on a topic of their own choice, chosen in consultation with an academic member of staff. Workshops early in the academic year provide the skills training necessary, whereas more specific tuition is provided through one to one supervision with a member of staff.

Objectives

To provide students with the opportunity to carry out a research project in a clearly-defined subject area in French Studies
To introduce students to core research skills (critical analysis, methodological skills, evaluation of primary and secondary material, accessing library material)
To enhance autonomous learning skills (organisation and self-management of an extended research project)
To allow students to avail of one-to-one supervision with a member of academic staff.
To encourage a capacity for independent analysis, thought and criticism

Learning outcomes
Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of a specific area of French Studies chosen by themselves. This will be developed through structured independent research and through one-to-one supervision.







Skills outcomes
The module will develop and enhance research and independent study skills including:
A capacity for critical analysis and evaluation
Writing skills (organising, presenting and structuring written work)
Library skills (sourcing relevant primary and secondary texts)
Communication and presentation skills


Syllabus

Week 1- Group meeting with dissertation module convenor
Week 2- Workshop: Managing a research project (SW)
Week 3- Workshop: Using the library and internet for research (Library representative)
Weeks 4-11 (Two half hour sessions with supervisor)
Week 14- Student-led workshop where students give short presentations on their topics.
Weeks 15-21 (Two half hour sessions with supervisor)
Dissertation submitted at the end of April

Students will pursue structured independent research on a chosen topic

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will submit a 1,500 word chapter to their supervisor and will receive detailed individual feedback on this work.
Student progress will be monitored throughout the module during supervision sessions.
