Module summary

This module takes people with no experience of GIS software and teaches them how to use various proprietary and open source GIS to analyse geographical data. Students are introduced to a range of desktop GIS functions including thematic mapping, spatial querying, spatial aggregation, geocoding, buffering, overlay, multi-criteria evaluation, etc., and how to carry out these functions in these software packages as appropriate.

Objectives

- Train students in the use of a variety of proprietary and open source GIS;
-Introduce students to a variety of data sources and how to extract data from online databases;
- Provide skills in data entry, manipulation, analysis and mapping and to be able to use the basic spatial analysis techniques included in GIS to solve geographical problems;
- Provide an appreciation of the differences between vector and raster models when used in application contexts.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will have
- a working knowledge of a variety of desktop GIS
- be familiar with online data sources
- be able to apply their skills and knowledge to solve geographical problems in a variety of application contexts

Skills outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of spatial patterns and relationships in human and environmental phenomena at a variety of scales together with the theory and application of quantitative, visualisation and other spatial techniques across a wide range of geographical contexts.
In terms of practical and professional skills to plan, design, execute and report on geographical research and to know when to employ a variety of technical methods for the analysis and presentation of spatial and environmental information. Also, to synthesise and interpret different types of geographical data and to recognise conceptual and ethical issues involved in geographical data.
Key skills developed include the ability to communicate effectively (in writing, verbally and through graphical presentations) and to apply numerical and computational skills to geographical information. Also, to identify, retrieve, sort and exchange geographical information using a wide range of sources and to use information technology effectively through a variety of software packages. Throughout the module to manage
time and organise work effectively.

Syllabus

- Using web-based systems to extract various geographic and attribute data for use in GIS
- Use of GIS for editing, display and production of cartographic output
- Use of GIS for various analyses (spatial selection, spatial query, geocoding, buffering, overlay, aggregation)
- Use of Spatial Analyst for raster data manipulation
- Multi-criteria evaluation techniques.
