Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...- understand how to perform a comprehensive search of the literature.
- have a working knowledge of different online search tools.

- have integrated and reinforced knowledge and understanding from multiple sources including taught modules and relevent literature.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the use of different online search tools.
- Discuss which search tools are appropriate for different subject areas.
- Manage search results.
- Demonstrate how to correctly reference cited material.
- Describe the process of undergoing a research/evaluation project
- Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges in doing such a project, and ways to address them
- Consider the importance of high quality research and evaluation in healthcare
- Explain the role of research ethics and governance arrangements in such projects
- Critique the research and ethical governance arrangements involved in health systems research
- Demonstrate verbal and written presentation skills
- Demonstrate the ability to synthesise information from multiple sources
- Demonstrate the ability to critique literature and question received opinion
Skills outcomes
Students will develop skills in literature searching, critical appraisal and academic writing including referencing and plagiarism.
They will enhance their project management skills including liaison with other health professionals and / or research and ethical bodies that support health service research.
Students will demonstrate the ability to present research findings to an academic audience (written and verbal presentation)

Syllabus
Each student will undertake a research project in a setting relevant to their chosen programme; primary care, public health, medical humanities, medical education or health informatics. The student will design the project, obtain ethical approval where necessary and undertake the research.
The taught seminars and on-line tutorial at the beginning of the module will introduce the students to academic writing and critical appraisal skills. They will also be taught about finding information including how to use online search tools and about how to manage search results. Students will be taught the correct referencing of cited material and how to create a bibliography.
Students will use the knowledge gained from the taught seminars to perform a comprehensive literature search on their chosen topic using a range of appropriate sources. This will provide the background to their research project.
Students will be given guidance during their research project by their supervisor.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Attendance record and participation in taught seminars and completion of on-line tutorial.Submission of an essay about the process and outcome of carrying out a literature search and review will demonstrate understanding of the taught sessions and progress in the task of carrying out a research project.
Students will keep a written record of each project supervision session, highlighting any difficulties and documenting progress.
