Module summary

This module introduces students to the range of effective interventions for substance misuse problems.

Objectives

This module aims to equip students with knowledge of:
- effective treatment protocols
- effective engagement styles
- mechanisms of motivation and behaviour change
- core practice skills of motivational enhancement and behaviour change counselling at the basic level

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Have an understanding of motivation and behaviour change in relation to substance use and misuse.
- Apply motivational interviewing micro skills.
- Conduct a behavioural assessment, make a behaviour change plan and monitor progress.
- Identify and recruit positive support for change.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of evidence based interventions and apply theory to practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practice of the therapeutic alliance.

Skills outcomes
Knowledge of the range of effective interventions and ability to describe these.


Syllabus

Engagement and therapeutic relationship skills
Evidence of effectiveness of psycho social and pharmacological interventions and therapist style.
The use of reflective practice and reflective journals.
