Module summary
This module provides the opportunity to explore in depth the literature on theory, research, practice and policy underpinning a question of the student's choosing.Objectives
- An opportunity to engage in independent study of a topic of their own choosing relevant to the addiction field.- A thorough knowledge of a specific topic.
- An opportunity to conduct a literature review, critically review evidence and identify key themes, and develop the ability to integrate material and demonstrate conceptual understanding.
- Academic presentation of structured dissertation.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
- discuss the characteristics of literature searching, literature reviews, systematic literature reviews and meta-analysis;
- critically review literature relevant to a subject area in the addiction field;
- demonstrate a thorough and detailed knowledge of a specific addiction topic of their own choice;
- evaluate the evidence for and validity of principles and theories about a specific addiction topic;
- demonstrate and discuss conceptual understanding of a chosen topic;
- present a structered written account and review of relevant literature;
- integrate material from a variety of sources; justify conclusions drawn from the interpretation of source material;
Skills outcomes
Critical appraisal skills for literature review and presentation.
Syllabus
The student will agree a dissertation topic in discussion with the module leader and make a plan to explore the topic in depth by conducting a review of the literature taking a systematic approach, identify key themes and offer a critical analysis of findings. The dissertation will encompass a structured argument around the chosen topic and demonstrate the ability to integrate material.

Private study
Being a distance learning module, the majority of student learning is through private study and independent learning, guided by a study manual and workbook which replace lectures. This is supplemented by reference lists for reading source materials and supported by telephone tutorials and e-mail correspondence (see above).Opportunities for Formative Feedback
