Module summary
This 15 credit module examines the development, role, functions and cultural practices of the police. It draws on historical, sociological, legal and political perspectives to analyse the nature, organisations, strategy and operations of local police forces in England and Wales. It considers the complex relations between policy, rules and culture in determining the nature of policing practices in given situational circumstances. Students are encouraged to consider the development of the police in its historical context and recognise the role, organisation and focus of policing operations are the result of historical and political contingencies. Students are expected to engage with a range of source material (primary and secondary) about the 'British Police', and reflect on the how the development of social theory has informed different perspectives on the role of the police. Objectives
1) To describe policing institutions and their operations with reference to their legal, political, social and cultural implications.2) To enable students to develop analytical and research and communication skills with reference to policing issues.
