Module summary
This module is a 15 credit module for any student with an interest in general consumer protection, whether safety, financial or in terms of general consumer sale. The consumer credit element of this course would serve as a useful complement to any banking, finance or business law moduleObjectives
The objectives of the module are to introduce the basic framework of consumer law, and how such law is enforced, more particularly providing a focus on how the law protects the consumer in everyday transactions. This encompasses not only the transactions themselves but the means of financing them through credit. The aim of the module is for students to be able to describe understand and assess the detail of regulation affecting consumer credit, consumer sales and provision of services, consumer safety and the practices of those involved in such consumer contracts.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Describe the relevant contractual principles relating specifically to consumer contracts
- Identify European and UK regulation in relation to consumer contracts
- Evaluate the nature and extent of consumer protection within UK law
- Apply appropriate consumer protection rules in problem-solving
- Discuss the role of government agencies in relation to consumer protection.

Seminar 1
Introductory seminar, looking at the various enforcement agencies, ombudsman, Enterprise Act 2002, European perspectives ( consumer acquis, proposal on Directive for Consumer Rights)

Seminar 3
The sale of goods and supply of services- contractual perspectives, including statutory regulation of sale of goods, supply of services, Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations 1999
Seminar 4
Product liability- civil and criminal law- Consumer Protection Act 1987 and related legislation, food safety.
Seminar 5
Sales practice- misleading advertising, Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations and regulation relating to pricing, doorstep selling and distance selling.
