Pre-requisite qualifications
Foundation Degree in Learning and Teaching (or equivalent) 80 credits at level 1 and 80 credits at level 2.This module is not approved as a discovery module
Objectives
- To identify the key characteristics of autism- To be aware of the impact of autism on individual development
- To critically evaluate strategies for working with autistic learners.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will have a knowledge of:
- The Triad of Impairment and the Autistic Spectrum
- The impact of autism on the development of the individual and their functioning in the learning environment
- A range of strategies for working with learners on the Autistic Spectrum.
Skills outcomes
- Alternative communication skills
- recognition of specific needs
- analysing and evaluating approaches
- planning to meet needs appropriately.
Syllabus
- What is autism and what does it mean to be autistic?
- Theories of causation
- Differences in perceptual and social functioning; potential barriers to learning, inlcuding challenging behaviour
- Recognised approaches to learning and teaching; inclusion and autism in the learning environment.

Private study
A key aspect of the module is the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the needs of autistic learners through private study, fieldwork and the use of electronic media sources.This requires skills in researching relevant literature and electronic media, and a willingness to undertake a fieldwork visit to a facility that caters for autistic learners.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the tutorials for the assignments.Access to tutors is also available via email. All students have a personal tutor.
