Module summary

This module introduces the basic statistical tools that are pre-requisites for understanding economics and business. IMPORTANT NOTE: - This module is available as a discovery module ONLY if taken with LUBS1950, and is NOT available to any students on single or joint honours programmes in Mathematics.- This module should NOT to be taken by students who have completed both S1 AND S2 in A-level Mathematics.

Objectives

The module aims to introduce and train students, without any prior A-level knowledge in statistics, in the most basic statistical concepts, and problem-solving techniques, ranging from visual and numerical methods in descriptive statistics to one-sample hypothesis testing in inferential statistics.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Engage with the applied literature in economics, accounting and industrial studies which utilise the basic techniques statistics
- Recognise and apply the main elementary techniques in statistics to general quantitative problems

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:

- use applications of statistics to solve basic problems in accounting, economics, and finance

Private study

Student will be required to engage with the lecture and tutorial material and in particular solve independently problems which will deepen their understanding of the material.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will complete weekly workshop exercises, periodic tests and will also be given the opportunity to attempt mock examinations. Comments and marks received for these tests are not part of the formal module-exam, and are intended solely to assist students with their exam preparations.
