Module summary

This module provides an overview of the nature of business in emerging economies, including the well-known BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) and a number of other fast growing economies which are recently drawing wide interest. Emphasis will be placed on the differences between these countries and the inter-relationship between them and the rest of the world. In particular, it also considers how the economic gravity shift towards these regions results in changing economic positions of large advanced economics and how this in turn, affects the strategies of multinational firms towards the developed and emerging markets.

Objectives

The module aims to explore the concept of “emerging markets” and to provide an introduction to the major strategic and operational challenges facing international businesses in entering and/or expanding into such a heterogeneous group of emerging markets.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- the changing interconnectedness between these economies through the examination of the bilateral trade and investment relationships between the countries of focus;
- the strategies of multinational enterprises (MNEs) originating from these economies towards other economies

On successful completion of this module students will be able to interpret and appraise:
- the key features of the political, economic, and business environments of emerging countries and their implications for firms interested in operating in these economies
- how a business may gain competitive advantages by managing strategies towards these markets, in particular the rising powers such as BRICs

Students are expected to read all the lecture notes and the attached material, and then to follow it up with further reading from the reading list.

Students will also be encouraged to revisit the case studies and suggested responses to monitor their progress throughout the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored each week through class discussion during a case study session. During these sessions students will be expected to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the lecture and their private study to answering case study questions.
