Module replaces

MECH 3845 Design and Manufacture Systems

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module candidates should be able to:
1. outline a range of advanced manufacturing processes and their advantages and disadvantages;
2. identify a candidate manufacturing process (or processes) for a product given details of the required productivity and the application needs;
3. explain the basic principles of manufacturing management;
4. describe methodologies, tools and techniques employed in manufacturing management and how they might be applied;
5. describe factory layout principles and to design appropriate arrangements in response to a given set of requirements;
6. define tools and techniques used to analyse production lines and understand their use for process improvements.

Skills outcomes
Candidates will have had the opportunity to develop the following skills through this module:-
- team working, including evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision making;
- independent learning;
- application of standard engineering analysis techniques.
- communication of information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms, whilst demonstrating understanding of levels of ambiguity and uncertainty.

Syllabus

The module will focus on advanced manufacturing processes, manufacturing management and simulation of production systems.

Consideration of advanced manufacturing processes such as powder metallurgy and layer manufacturing techniques will develop knowledge of manufacturing processes and the product needs which define which manufacturing processes will be used in production, and develop understanding of how manufacturing processes may be modelled to provide information on process control, process limitations and machine design.

Manufacturing management introduces the strategies, methods and tools used in the manufacturing management and production systems analysis. Several manufacturing strategies will be examined, including MRP and JIT, to evaluate how these strategies define the nature of the manufacturing system and to define the characteristics of those systems that adopt these strategies. Understanding of the manufacturing systems analysis tools and methods will be developed to provide information on the design, operation and control of manufacturing systems. This will address the design and analysis of production lines and facilities and scheduling and loading techniques.

The application of Witness software will be used to demonstrate how software tools, such as discrete event simulation, can be used in the design and analysis of production systems. This hands-on activity, supported by lectures, will provide a context for the integration of material from the manufacturing management strand, such as the Theory of Contraints, loading and queue theory.
