Pre-requisite qualifications

Normally, a degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, health care, health management, a science, a social science or in a profession allied to medicine.

Applications are encouraged from non-graduates with work experience in health research.

MEDR 5110 (Handling data in research)
MEDR5120 (Analytic research)
MEDR5130 (Intervention research).

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- identify the appropriate statistical test to analyse data in a variety of situations;
- check the validity of the assumptions behind this test;
- perform this test in a statistical computer package;
- present their results appropriately;
- interpret the results of their analyses;
- comment critically on statistical tests reported in medical journal articles.

Syllabus

The teaching style for this module will be active and participative.

In a series of seminars with group activities, students will be introduced to a variety of different parametric and non-parametric statistical tests, the conditions under which each test is appropriate, how to check that these conditions are met, how to carry out these tests for themselves in STATA, how to present and interpret their results and comment on others' reports containing such statistical tests.
