This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

This module is an introduction to the process of undertaking a research project under supervision – whether that be primary research (quantitative or qualitative in structure), secondary research (eg a systematic review), or service evaluation. Critical appraisal of published research will underpin the written account of the project, set out as a dissertation.

Learning outcomes
Once a student has successfully completed the module and its assignments he or she should be able to:

- set out a clear research question
- apply a suitable and feasible research design for answering the question
- critically review the relevant published literature in an orderly way
- gain any ethical approval needed for the study
- work effectively with the study's supervisors, collaborators and participants
- collect study data methodically and impartially
- analyse data, taking account of chance and bias, where appropriate
- write about the research in a clear way
- reflect on the research experience and the findings

Skills outcomes
This module provides students with a critical understanding of: devising, designing, planning, conducting, analysing, and writing up a research project. The written dissertation will show critical appraisal both of published research and of the original project’s methods.

Syllabus

The development of the research project will usually begin at the start of the semester following the student's successful completion of diploma modules.

The student will, at an early stage, discuss research ideas with the module leader. The student will then be expected to choose a health research question and write a 1-2 page proposal describing how the project would answer the question. The module leader will then determine whether he or she regards the project as feasible in the time allotted and, if so, will approve its initiation. At this stage the module leader will appoint an individual supervisor for the student.

The student will then carry out the project, supervised regularly, over the next 1-4 semesters. At its completion, the project will be written up as a dissertation (maximum 12,000 words). It will be presented to the School of Medicine, after the supervisor has had opportunity to scrutinise the final version, in a loose- or soft-bound form. In due course, the dissertation will be examined by two examiners.

The student will then carry out the project, supervised regularly, over the next 1-4 semesters. At its completion, the project will be written up as a dissertation (usually 10,000-12,000 words). It will be presented to the School of Medicine, after the supervisor has had opportunity to scrutinise the final version, in a bound form. In due course, the dissertation will be examined by internal and external examiners.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

1. Progress of student to the acceptance, by the module leader and a senior member of programme management team, of a feasible study design.
2. Regular individual supervision meetings, to include task-setting and progress reporting.
