Objectives

The aim of the project is to enable the student to put into practice, in an extended edition of professional standard, the knowledge, skills and experience gained in MUSI5430 Editing and Archival Studies. On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

- Make an accurate transcription from original musical sources.
- Write an appropriate and informed critical commentary, detailing editorial policy, alterations, and variants.
- Supply a comprehensive source description.
- Compile an introduction outlining the historical and performance practice implications of the source.
- Devise, plan, execute, and report on independent work.
- Write a coherent argument.
- Identify and make use of appropriate methodologies.
- Present edited music in clear, consistent and meaningful format.
- Demonstrate familiarity with music-processing software, as appropriate to the project.

Syllabus

The project will involve transcription from an original source or sources, researching historical context and performance practice issues, and compiling an introduction with critical commentary. The work(s) chosen may be from any repertoire of European art music from the Middle Ages to the present day, so long as there is a notated or recorded source, or equivalent means through which the reader can check the accuracy and validity of the edition. There is no formal syllabus; independent work will be carried out and paced through the academic year in consultation with an approved supervisor from the School of Music.
