Year running 2016/17

Pre-requisite qualifications

Two years of satisfactory completion of medical undergraduate course.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- select suitable research techniques or combinations of techniques to address most of the basic problems relevant to international health;
- synthesise methods and results from quantitative and qualitative research modes;
- critically assess research methods when applied by others;
- understand the relevance of research results to improving the health of populations.

Syllabus

The research methods module will introduce medical undergraduates to quantitative and qualitative research methods relevant to international health by application of these methods to the solution of practical research problems. These problems will, for the most part, relate to the topic areas which each of the students has chosen for their Project A and project B modules. By means of this orientated approach, sessions in this module will cover the following range of quantitative method designs - descriptive studies, surveys, critical analysis of routinely collected information, ecological studies, case control studies, cohort studies, community based intervention studies and randomised controlled trial - together with the relevant statistical measures and analysis. It will cover the following range of qualitative methods - documentary analysis, case study, participant observation, semi-structured interviews and focus group work - together with the relevant methods of analysis for each. The emphasis will be on relevance to practical problems, combinations of methods where appropriate and novel designs if relevant.
