Objectives
On this module, students develop a single area of specialism within one of three strands, including: performance technique, applied performance and textual practices. The schedule of work typically involves studio-based investigation and/or work in the field, individual reading and research as well as self-directed group work, agreed via a learning contract with supervising tutors.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- contextualise an independent programme of work with reference to an appropriate range of theoretical perspectives and methodologies;
- evaluate the inter-relationships between independent practices and (i) those of the professional world; (ii) theoretical and critical perspectives;
- reflect critically and report formally on the progress and execution of the work at key stages of the process.
Syllabus
Under tutorial supervision, students will be required creatively, practically and critically to explore a specified area of performance practice and to communicate the outcomes in an appropriate form of live presentation (which may include work in the field). Working in small groups or individually, students will choose one area of specialism from a list that normally includes: a) performance technique, b) textual and dramaturgical practices, and c) applied performance.
Students will negotiate with tutors, in the form of a learning contract, an appropriate programme of investigative independent study and creative work within one of these areas. Students' critical attitude should be implicit in the design, form and style of the presentation. Students will be expected to take collective responsibility for the selection of material and the organisation of investigative processes & final presentation. Supporting documentation appropriate to the particular exercise, reflecting on the student's role, working process and achievement, will be required of all students.
