Module summary

The module applies a number of perspectives to conflicts and insurgencies in Southeast Asia, including security and (counter)insurgency perspectives, the comparative character of militant movements, perspectives based on minority rights and identity politics, explorations of the salience of religion, studies of language politics, questions of autonomy and decentralization, and the issue of peace negotiations and dialogue processes.

Objectives

On completion, students should be able to:
a) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of conflicts and insurgencies in the Southeast Asian context
b) Be able to appraise competing interpretations of these conflicts, linking them to domestic and international political conditions and developments
c) Use analytical skills to present independent research on topics in this area.

Learning outcomes
Students will be equipped with empirical knowledge of a set of specific conflicts in contemporary Southeast Asia, along with an understanding of analytical tools which can deployed in approaching comparable movements in other parts of the world, and different historical time periods.

Skills outcomes
Political analysis; risk assessment; report-writing; presentation skills
