Module summary

A succinct introduction to the study of the key issues in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (in particular nuclear weapons).

Objectives

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- analyse, understand and discuss theoretical approaches to the causes of the proliferation of weapons of mass destructions;
- demonstrate a sound basic knowledge of important issues in contemporary international security as they relate to nuclear weapons;
- and be able to undertake research in it.

Learning outcomes
Students will acquire a sound and thorough knowledge of:
- nuclear weapons policies
- the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and other international conventions related to WMD
- the work of the IAEA
- exports controls and the Proliferation Security Initiative.

Skills outcomes
- research skills, including the skills of accessing relevant information from a range of sources;
- assessing, analysing and criticising information;
- appraising relevant concepts and theories;
- presenting and communicating effectively the product of independent research.


Syllabus

This module studies the non-proliferation regime, the theoretical explanations for the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the NPT and the Review conferences, export control regimes, using some specific case studies such as India and Pakistan, North Korea and Iran.
