Module summary
This module provides a detailed analysis which follows the rise and evolution of Hezbollah from an Islamic resistance movement to its role as a governing force in Lebanon while also exploring the group's impact on the security and power dynamics in the Middle East, this is done through a particular focus on the importance of multiple forms of identity politics within the movement.Objectives
On completion, students should be able to:a) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the rise and evolution of Hezbollah, set this within Lebanese politics and wider changes in the region, be familiar with the main debates on the group's identity politics and intentions, and the reaction of their opponents.
b) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the difficulty of defining Hezbollah and be able to compare and contrast the Party of God with other insurgent, terrorist and Islamist movements.
c) Be able to appraise competing theories and interpretations of the concepts, used in the academic literature through which to analyse Hezbollah
d) Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of theoretical and empirical literature on political violence, power-sharing, identity politics and allied fields.
e) Use analytical skills to present independent research on topics in this area.
Learning outcomes
Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Hezbollah within its Lebanese and Middle Eastern contexts and be able to critically analyse the Party of God using appropriate theoretical and methodological tools from the separate fields of comparative politics, terrorism studies and Middle Eastern politics.
