Module summary

This module showcases some of the excellent research that is undertaken at Leeds; you will get to sample the diversity of research topics within psychology and begin to appreciate the importance and value of research to society. Research within the School of Psychology is addressing five Research Grand Challenges; these are:- Healthy nutrition, Physical Activity and Well-being - The Nervous System and its Disorders - Successful Ageing - Successful Childhood Development - Behaviour Change You will discover how fundamental research conducted by staff within IPS contributes towards these important topics.

Objectives

This module aims to provide an overview of the research grand challenges in order to highlight some of the research expertise of staff within the School of Psychology at Leeds.
The module will be taught by a team of leading researchers from the five Research Grand Challenges.
Students will be encouraged to see their learning as one aspect of the work of an active and vibrant School; they will appreciate the importance of research in creating the best learning environment.

Learning outcomes
This module aims to provide an overview of the key issues and research approaches contained within the School's five Research Grand Challenges.

On completion of this module students should be able to:

- show an understanding of the variety of research expertise in psychology at Leeds
- appreciate key concepts and issues in psychological research, as it is conducted at Leeds
- demonstrate an appreciation of the scientific approach to addressing important issues within society, in relation to research at Leeds
- demonstrate knowledge of some current issues and controversies in psychology, and appreciate how research at Leeds is addressing these issues

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should have begun to develop skills in:
- understanding a scientific approach to the study of behaviour, as it is practised in Leeds
- evaluating data and evidence and appreciating the relationship between data and theory
- developing an understanding of the range of psychological research at Leeds, in relation to the broader discipline
- following up taught material with relevant reading and research


Syllabus

The opening lecture will provide an overview of the research ethos within the School of Psychology
There will subsequently be lectures on topics that fall within each of the five Research Grand Challenges (two lectures per challenge, i.e. a total of 10 lectures).
