Objectives

The overaching aim of this module is to develop students' knowledge, awareness, understanding and ability to critically analyse a range of theory and methods across a variety of health-related topics.

Learning outcomes
Understand and critically analyse major techniques, theories and methods used across a variety of health-related domains (clinical; patient safety; health behaviours).

Skills outcomes
At the end of this module, students should be able to:
- show good understanding of a variety of methods, techniques and theories used by academic staff members engaging in health-related research at the Univ. of Leeds (particularly IPS)
- critically evaluate the health-related research conducted within the Univ. of Leeds (particularly IPS).


Syllabus

Clinical issues:
a) The Common Sense Self-Regulation Model and Dementia
b) Ageing, Anorexia, & Health
c) Treating movement disorders.

Patient Safety:
a) Measuring patient safety from a psychological perspective
b) Communicating Health Risk Information.

Attitudes, Affect & Health Behaviours:
a) Affective attitudes and health behaviours
b) Implicit attitudes and dietary behaviours
c) Stress, emotion and health.

Private study

- 10 hours reading and preparation per 2 hour seminar
- 50 hours preparation for MCQ exam.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be expected to contribute to each seminar through class discussions based on set readings assigned with each seminar.

An online MCQ (worth 0%) will be provided in week 7 to monitor progress and to provide students with experience of the form of assessment that will be used at the end of the module.
