Objectives

Plan and conduct a substantial research project (including a detailed literature review) ;Demonstrate specialised knowledge in a specific research area; Employ appropriate research methods for the specific research topic; Utilise at least one form of qualitative or quantitative data analysis with competence; Report a substantial research project competently in a manner consistent with a published journal article; Present the findings of the research in the format of an academic conference paper.

Syllabus

Semester 2:
Identification of a research topic and supervisor.
Initial discussion of ideas and design.
Submission of research proposal form, including title of research, brief summary of relevant literature, description of the methodology and outline of the research design.

Semester 3:
Literature and data collection, data analysis and written report.
Presentation of research project at departmental conference and, where appropriate, at a national conference e.g. BPS Division of Health Psychology.
Students will devise a specific research topic in consultation with their supervisor. The general research themes for the this project relate to the specific taught modules and include:
1. Cardiovascular Behavioural Medicine;
2. Social Psychology of Substance Abuse;
3. Interface of Spirituality and Health-Illness;
4. Error in medicine;
5. Regulation of clinical practice;
6. Risk management in the Health Service;
7. Social cognition models and the prediction of health behaviours (e.g. exercise, compliance, recovery from illness);
8. Psychosocial aspects of genetic and prenatal screening;
9. The impact of health technologies on beliefs about health and illness;
10. User perspectives of mental health;
11. Outcomes of health interventions;
12. Models of self-help;
13. Service evaluation;
14. Psychological therapies.
