Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to -Critically appraise the aetiological features of key neuropsychological disorders
Evaluate and appreciate the various methods used to examine the neuropsychological deficits
Critically evaluate the role of neuropsychological data in shaping theoretical models of normal processing
Be able to communicate, to a variety of audiences, sound knowledge of the current issues in this field
Offer a critical opinion of the relationship between neural structures and cognitive models
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to -
Describe and evaluate a range of neuropsychological disorders, including their neural aetiology, cognitive profiles, and key theoretical explanations proposed.
Discuss and evaluate approaches to the support and/or rehabilitation of different patient groups
Consider how research can be connected to application with different special populations
Skills outcomes
This module support the development of:
Critical evaluation of advanced academic texts, specifically, publications in high-ranking international journals;
Communication of ideas and arguments in a well-structured and reasoned manner;
Analytic and creative thinking;
Information retrieval, synthesis and evaluation;

Syllabus
This module examines the study of neuropsychological disorders. A range of impairments will be considered from empirical, clinical, and applied perspectives, examining the cognitive and neural basis in each case, and considering methods of assessment, intervention and rehabilitation.
The module will cover current topics among the following:
Aphasia and other language disorders; dementia; impairments in perception and action; frontal lobe damage and cognitive control; degenerative diseases of the CNS (e.g. Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis); amnesia; affective disorders; traumatic brain injury; temporal lobe epilepsy; mental disorders.

Private study
Students will have 178 private study hours. We envisage that this time will be spent thus:Reading for each lecture: 11 x 6 hours 66 hours
Preparing in-class presentation 20 hours
Preparing and writing research protocol 40 hours
Revision and exam practice 30 hours
For the remaining 22 hours we anticipate that students will use electronic materials, participate in e-learning, and on-line discussion.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored primarily through participation in-group discussion (in class and through an online discussion board), and through their role in student-led presentations in designated sessions.
