Objectives
This module focuses on the planning and designing of research, and aims to demonstrate how to turn social research issues and questions into workable and appropriate research designs. The intention is to encourage students to think and act strategically in social research, and to help them to gain the skills needed to do this.The module will help students in the difficult task of linking what are often seen as abstract theoretical and methodological perspectives with practical research strategies.
Syllabus
The module provides a step by step approach to research design through weekly workshops which concentrate on key issues and questions which researchers need to recognise, confront and resolve in the design of social research.
Issues and questions to be covered include:
- Introduction to research design and research strategy
- Linking methodological perspectives and practical strategies
- Generating research problems and questions
- Principles of sampling and selection in research design
- Choosing appropriate methods for generating and collecting data
- Principles of data analysis
- Ethics, politics and practicalities of research design
- Writing research proposals, applying for funding
- Research project management, working in teams
- Dissemination, relationships with wider audiences, uses of social research.
